It was because I had these feelings, and because I thought that possibly it might be of some assistance if a book designed particularly for his use, both in his student days and after he began practice were provided, that I accepted the invitation of the publishers to undertake the preparation of this volume. Except that its plan differs to some extent from that generally adopted in other textbooks on public health, and the view-point is not quite the same as that taken by the authors of the majority of the well-known books on the subject, there is nothing particularly original in the contents of that now submitted.
