Description

Thirty-five million Americans are living beyond the age of sixty-five, a twenty-five year increase in life expectancy since 1900. This longevity, once the gift of a few, has become the destiny of many. This time of life is not just about retiring; in fact many who retire return happily to some type of employment. It is a new stage of life filled with its own unique challenges and opportunities. Co-authors Jane and Peggy Thayer, a mother-daughter team of psychologists, have named this stage of life, 'elderescence.'

Author Biography:

Jane Thayer closed her psychotherapy practice after 25 years in Washington, DC and moved to Martha's Vineyard in 1995. She currently has a small private practice on the Vineyard and is a trained mediator for the Martha's Vineyard Mediation Program. Dr. Thayer earned her doctorate in Clinical Psychology from George Washington University, Washington, DC. Peggy Thayer has been a practicing painter for 30 years. Her recent landscapes portray her relationship with nature. She has been a year-round resident of Martha's Vineyard for 10 years. Her educational background includes undergraduate studies in Fine Arts as well as graduate studies in transpersonal psychology. She holds a doctorate in East/West Psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco.
