I have only given the most reliable authorities in each case, but it can scarcely be said that there is any authority for the considerable number, of which there is no published description. The following is the best analysis of the whole I can give from such imperfectly ascertained facts. The numbers correspond with those in the table: --Total. Vitrifaction much or considerable, Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 14, 15, 16, 19, 28, 35. 12 Vitrifaction trifling or none, site of some doubtful, Nos. 20, 21, 22, 24, 29, 30, 32, 36, 42, 45, 46, 50, 51, 52, 53..... IS Amount doubtful from conflicting evidence, or from concealment by overgrowth, Nos. 9, 25, 38, 39, 41, 43, 44, 47, 48...9 "Vitrified" on O.M., but no information, Nos. 7, 11, 12, 17, 18, 49.. 6 Alleged "vitrified forts" not marked as vitrified on the O.M., no information, Nos. 31, 33, 40........3 Site not known or doubtful, and no description, Nos. 10, 13, 23, 26, 27, 34, 37 7 52 FORM AND SIZE OF VITRIFIED FORTS. 189 The general result of the analysis is that in seven alleged examples the site even is unknown; that in eighteen, either from conflicting evidence or the insufficiency of information, no definite opinion can be given; that in fifteen the vitrifaction seems to amount to little or nothing; and that only in twelve has it been undoubtedly found to be great or considerable. I do not think it necessary to give in detail some other particulars that I have collected, but I may state shortly regarding the twelve undoubted good examples that in plan two are circular, five are oval, two have nearly straight sides and rounded ends, one is rudely pentagonal, one is broadly pear-shaped, ...
