This is history as it happened. True stories in this movie.
Dunkirk is a 1958 British war film available on Blu-ray, directed by Leslie Norman and starring John Mills, Richard Attenborough and Bernard Lee. It was based on two novels: Elleston Trevor's The Big Pick-Up and Lt. Col. Ewan Hunter and Maj. J. S. Bradford's Dunkirk.
Recognised as one of the great battles of World War II – a significant component of the Battle of France on the Western Front - Dunkirk follows the events leading up to Operation Dynamo where the British Army meticulously planned and positioned itself to rescue fellow soldiers and allied troops stranded in Nazi-occupied France. Telling a complex story of isolation, heroism and sacrifice from the viewpoints of Corporal ‘Tubby’ Binns (Academy Award® winner John Mills, Ryan's Daughter) and newspaper reporter Charles Foreman (Bernard Lee, Dr No), Dunkirk captures the desperation, chaos and camaraderie of wartime. With the Germans rapidly winning the Battle of France and threatening to destroy the Allied forces nearby Dunkirk, the British Admiralty commandeers all available civilian boats to aid the evacuation, with Foreman considering to pilot his own motorboat and help with the rescue. Incorporating real-life archival footage and featuring Richard Attenborough (Jurassic Park), Lionel Jeffries (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) as well as a cast of genuine army officers, Dunkirk is one of the most authentic representations of conflict during WWII.
