In a neighbourhood run by gangsters a young tough (Toshiro Mifune) visits the local doctor, Sanada (Takashi Shimura), after he is wounded in a gun fight. When he is diagnosed with tuberculosis Sanada insists on treating the stubborn hoodlum and an uneasy friendship develops. However, his former boss returns from prison and the ailing young man, in danger of losing his status, confronts the prewar gangster in an attempt to keep control of the gang. Set against a gackdrop of a post-war shanty town, Drunken Angel is considered to be Kurosawa’s first auteur piece and still stands as a criticism of the futility of gangster life and a testament to the human spirit.
