This movie sees Kevin Smith at arguably the height of his creative power, and is a must for fans of Silent Bob and good comedy. Hype has died down about the unfounded claims that this is a blasphemous film (Smith is himself a catholic), meaning that it is easier to sit back and enjoy the movie for what it is – irreverent, often thought provoking entertainment. Essentially the movie is about catholic dogma – a church has made a change to the ‘rules’ of christianity in an effort to modernize the church. Unfortunately this provides a loophole for two banished angels, who seek to return to their place in heaven. Problem is that by doing so they would prove God wrong meaning that existence itself would unravel! Strong performances all round, and Alan Rickman as the Metatron (voice of god) is fantastic.
