"The Doctor is in Paris...with aliens"
3 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

I really want to give this 3 1/2 stars, because overall, it was better than just average. Tom Baker is an all-time favourite of many, but never was my cup of Milo. This is one of his better stories, but two things I must complain about first:

This was an obvious excuse to go and film in another country. Very likely justified by “Oh, think of all the wonderful scenic shots we'll get – it'll be a visual symphony”. Which of course is what you get…lots of shots of the Doctor and Romana in Paris, and little story in between. And secondly, my ever-present complaint of the tacky, humanoid, and downright laughable alien. The modern-day BBC obviously agrees, because there's a brilliant Special Feature on Disc 2! That's worth buying it for alone.

When they did get down to developing the plot, the story was actually OK, and the Fourth Doctor was more tolerable than in previous series.

Worth a watch, provided you love the Mona Lisa, and aren't particularly fond of chickens…(Animal lovers be warned!!!)

Description

The Doctor (Tom Baker) and Romana are enjoying a well-earned break in Paris, relaxing in the gentle delights of the art galleries, the waterfront cafes, the Eiffel Tower… and the unexpected jumps in time that no one else seems to notice…

Rare treasures and once-lost masterpieces are suddenly in auction houses all over the world, the only link to them all being the mysterious Count Scarlioni. But what project is he secretly financing in the basement of his Paris chateau?

The time-travellers meet up with Duggan, a private detective investigating the activities of the Count and his accomplices. Can Scarlioni be planning the most audacious and daring of all art thefts? Or are his ambitions much grander? Big enough to threaten the existence of the entire human race…?
