Description

This work contains essays by Simon O'Sullivan, David Burrows, and afterword by Ronnie Simpson. With its equal elements of craft and creativity, colour and scale, and its knowing nod towards art history, DJ Simpson's work uses the language of painting and the techniques of drawing. His work critiques minimalist sensibilities on a monumental scale, using cheap, low-tech materials to produce high-value contemporary art products. Simpson's work presents a challenge to the exhibition space, their massive scale sitting awkwardly within the gallery. These works are dynamic, loud, their cartoon-like scale dwarfing the solemn gallery architecture. Simpson's art within such a setting is like organizing a rave in a church. This book re-presents and explores DJ Simpson's first solo museum show, held at Mead Gallery in 2006.
