"True to discworld, and a very entertaining game."
5 stars"

Review by Andrew on 4th January, 2012

This game makes excellent use of the characters and locations Pratchett has created. Very amusing cards and effects.

Lots of fun to play, game time can vary between 15 mins and an hour. We usually play at least 2 games of this, and it seems like new things happen every game. There are lots of interesting ways the card effects can be combined.

"Great strategy Game"

For fans of Terry Pratchett to fans of Settlers of Catan, this game has something for everyone. Even works well as a 2 player game, which a lot of these sorts of games don't usually.

"Discworld experience at it's best"
5 stars"

Review by Kyle on 12th February, 2013

We love this game. A fun interactive way to immerse yourself in Terry Pratchett's Diskworld.

The game has a lovely layered mechanic where every player has a secret agenda while trying to take control over Ankh-Morpork. You'll meet your favorite characters and some crazy-random adventures on the way!

The artwork and the production value is excellent, the game looks and feels gorgeous and gives an immersive experience. This is a special treat in our collection.

"Fun, social and high quality."

3 of us played this, it took us 20mins to read through and understand the rule book as none of us have ever played before. Once you start playing you get the gist of it and really get into trying to take over the city. The game pieces are made of painted wood, the coins are however quite thick cardboard and the cards are just standard paper but have beautiful & amusing illustrations on them. We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves as had several passersby stop to enquire and inspect the game as it looks as entertaining as it is.

"Not just for Discworld Fans"

This game regularly comes out of the cupboard to play .A game generally takes about an hour and is quick to learn for newbie’s. If you are a regular discworld reader you will get a few extra laughs from the character cards but not knowing anything about the series will be no impediment to playing

"Love the books, you'll love the game."

A brilliant depiction of what it would be like to try and wrest control of Ankh-Morepork if it existed out of fiction. The fact that the cards you use are essentially characters from the books adds that extra flavour as each does as expected, i.e. Death Kills lots of minions whereas Susan stops a minion from being killed!

If you enjoyed the books and enjoy some mad Discworld fun then this game is for you. (A more detailed review can be found over at my blog: http://wp.me/pXLGE-20)

Description

Traditionally, Martin Wallace's designs for his own Treefrog Games – and before that for Warfrog Games – have been based on real-world history: trains in the UK, battles in Poland, revolutionaries in France, and so on.

Not this time – for Spiel 2011 Wallace and Treefrog Games present Ankh-Morpork, with the setting being the largest city-state in Terry Pratchett's Discworld. Says Wallace, “The storyline is that Lord Vetinari has disappeared and certain factions are trying to take control of the city.” Each player has a secret personality with specific victory conditions, which means that you're not sure exactly what the other players need to do in order to win.

The action takes place on a map of Ankh-Morpork, with players trying to place minions and buildings through card play. Each of the 132 cards is unique, and says Wallace, “The cards bring the game to life as they include most of the famous characters that have appeared in the various books. The rules are relatively simple: Play a card and do what it says. Most cards have more than one action on them, and you can choose to do some or all of these actions. Some cards also allow you to play a second card, so you can chain actions.”

A team of artists will recreate the city and its residents for the cards, game board and box, with Bernard Pearson coordinating that team. Ankh-Morpork has been sublicensed to Mayfair Games for the North American market and Kosmos for the German market.
