Ambrose Spencer: Late Chief Justice of the State of New York; Delivered in the Second Presbyterian Church, Albany, on Sabbath Evening, April 20, 1848 "Know ye not that there is a prince and a great man fallen this day in Israel?" The illustrious personage here referred to is Abner, the uncle of King Saul, and, for some time, a general in his army. After Saul's death, his son Ishbosheth succeeded to the throne, and Abner still zealously supported the interests of his house in opposition to David; but in most of their skirmishes, (for their hostile meetings amounted to nothing more, ) he suffered a defeat. While the two armies were encamped near each other in the neighborhood of Gibeon, Abner barbarously challenged Joab, one of David's generals, to put forward twelve men from his ranks, to meet an equal number of his own in deadly conflict. The challenge was accepted; the fight ensued; and every one of them was slain by the sword of his fellow.
