Description

Excerpt from Die Freiherren Von Gemperlein Und Krambambuli: Zwei Erzahlungen The following two stories by one of Germany's most prominent female authors have been edited with a special view to the needs of second or third year students in the schools and of college students at the end of their first or at the beginning of their second year. The subject-mat ter of both stories, one humorous, the other pathetic, is sure to hold their attention and interest from beginning to end. In the notes the attempt has constantly been made to distinguish between literal explanation and idio matic translation for the editor believes that the well wom controversy, whether literal or idiomatic renderings should be insisted on, will cease to exist as soon as it is generally recognized that an explanation is not necessar ily a translation, nor vice warm, but that the school-room should insist on both. A brief appendix on the pronun ciation of foreign words has been added, since both stories contain quite a number of them, and students are generally very deficient in this not unimportant subject.
