The author's chief consideration, however, in the formal treatment of the texts, was their adaptability for conversational class work. In addition to the grammatical arrangement, the texts have been carefully selected so as to give the students a preliminary acquaintance with Germany, and the history, literature, and life of the Germans. It is the author's conviction that we should not teach foreign languages for the sake of their grammar, nor for their own sake; foreign language study must serve as a path from the souls of foreign people to our own, and this is not possible unless we give our students at least the most essential informa tion about the country whose language they are learning.
