Description

Excerpt from Der Dritte: Vorspiel in Einem Aufzug Julius roderick benedix is one of the most popular, as well as one of the most prolific, of German playwrights. Born at Leipzig on January 2lst, 1811, he completed his course at the gymnasium in 1831 and then went on the stage, passing the next ten years acting and singing in the theatres of middle Germany and the Rhine country. His first original play, 'dae bemoofte Sjaupt, was brought out in 1841, and its success proved the turning-point in his life. On the appearance during the next year of 'dr. Qbeepe, his second and still one of his most popular comedies, he gave up acting, but continued his connection with the stage for some years longer by taking part at difierent times in the management of theatres at Elberfeld, Cologne, and Frankfurt am Main. He also gave lessons in music and elocution and lectured on German literature. In 1861 he returned to Leip zig, where he devoted his whole time to literary work, and where he died, after a lingering illness, in 1873.
