Gardeners throughout the world love these majestic tall flowers but few are aware of the range of colour and form that are now available with the burst of new cultivars, several of which have been awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit. Not just blue, but red, pink, violet, yellow and white forms are available. David and Shirley Bassett are two leading experts on delphiniums, raising and introducing new varieties. They bring all their expertise and enthusiasm to this book, which is a much-awaited publication on a plant that offers much to the gardener. Fully illustrated with colour photography, their book covers: Garden delphiniums: an introduction Wild delphiniums Cultivated delphiniums The Breeding of cultivated delphiniums Using delphiniums in the garden General cultivation: soil requirements Propagation Pests and diseases Breeding new delphiniums Growing unusual delphiniums
Former University lecturers (Cell Biology and Chemistry), David and Shirley Bassett have grown delphiniums for many years, raising and introducing new varieties and competing in shows. In recent years they have both been heavily involved with The Delphinium Society. David Bassett is the author of the RHS Wisley Handbook on Delphiniums, published in 1990, and for a period of more than ten years wrote regularly for Garden News as their Delphinium Specialist.
