Description

Harriet Martineau (1802-1876) was a British social theorist and writer, often cited as the first female sociologist. Deerbrook, which was written in1838 after Martineau's return from a long visit to the USA and published the following year, portrays a failed love affair between a physician and his sister-in-law and is considered her most successful novel.
