Excerpt from Dams Within Jurisdiction of the State of California: December, 1979 Today, provisions of the Dam Safety Act are administered by the Department's Division of Safety of Dams. Engineers and geologists of the Division review plans and specifications for construction of new dams, and for enlargement, repair, or removal of existing dams. When a new dam is proposed, Division personnel investigate the site and the construction materials, and identify any conditions that may require design changes. After making certain that the proposed site and the plans are in accord with the Dam Safety Act, the Division then issues formal approval, allow ing the builder to begin construction. While a dam.is under construction, Division personnel make frequent checks for compliance with approved plans and specifications. Before a completed dam.may be operated, the Department of Water Resources must issue a Certificate of Approval, attesting to the safety of both the dam and reservoir.
