Fishing has always been a big part of New Zealand life, as far back as the legendary Maui who pulled the North Island from the sea. No-one’s boasted such a catch since, but fishing is one of our most popular recreational pastimes.
But many Kiwis also fish for their living – and they feature in this selection of great Country Calendar stories. Like the fishing industry itself, our stories cover most parts of our coast, from Fiordland to north of Cape Reinga.
We meet an enterprising chap who has developed an export market for clams, a couple who have found a way to make a living year-round from catching whitebait and a group who are re-seeding their fishing grounds with baby paua to ensure good catches into the future.
We also go harvesting mussels as well as fishing for oysters and crayfish. And we meet people who hunt all sorts of finfish, from snapper and gurnard to cod and tuna.
If you enjoy a fishing yarn or two and want to meet old (and young) salts, this is the collection for you.
