Excerpt from Collections Historical Archaeological Relating to Montgomeryshire and Its Borders, Vol. 33: Issued by the Powys-Land Club for the Use of Its Members This beautiful Reredos, exquisitely carved in the later Decorated style, consists of a wide central compartment and two niches on each side, surmounted by rich ogival arcading, foliated and cusped, with open tracery above. The subject of the central division is the Appearance of our Risen Lord to the disci les at the Sea of Tiberias (st. John xxi., A Lam rests before Him and another is grazing at His side. In His right hand is a Shepherd's crook, and His left is extended towards the recipient of His charge (feed my lambs feed my sheep viz., the kneeling apostle St. Peter in the foreground. To our Saviour's right are grouped ss. James, Nathanael and another; to the left, ss. John, Andrew and Philip. The four niches are occupied by figures of British Saints, who flourished within the area of the diocese Beuno, the Patron Saint, Melangell, Asaph and Winifred. St. Beuno, represented as a 14th century Friar, to correspond with the architectural style of the Reredos, is robed in cloak and cowl, with knotted girdle and unshod feed, but distinguished by the British tonsure, and holding a Crucifix aloft in his right hand. The impressiveness of this figure is striking and well represents the saintly evan eliser of the district. St. Melangell (monacella? Of Pennant has her hands clasped and raised in prayer, and resting on her left shoulder a crook with the head turne inwards. Her emblem, a Hare, crouches close at her feet.
