Description

Excerpt from Collection of Essays and Tracts in Theology, From Various Authors, Vol. 6: With Biographical and Critical Notices Among those, who have raised themselves from oh scurity to eminence by the force of their own genius and character, there are few more illustrious examples than jeremy taylor. He was the son of a barber, and born in Cambridge. The date of his birth is not recorded, but he was baptised on the 15th of August, 1613. Hardly a fact is known of his early life, except that he attended a Grammar School in Cambridge, and at the age of thirteen was admitted to Caius College, in the University of that place. He was entered as a sizer, or servitor, in which capacity he was enabled, by his personal services, to diminish the expenses incident to an education at the University. His biographers mention no other event in his life, till he took his Bachelor's degree in the year 1630. Bishop Rust says, that immediately after he was graduated he was chosen fellow, but this has been denied on the ground, that the college books of that day contain no such record. He remained at the University, however, as a student in Theology, and was admitted to orders in the Church before he was twenty one years old.
