Description

Excerpt from City Report, 1987-1988: City of Rochester, New Hampshire Before reviewing where Rochester has been and looking to where it will be going the next few years, I want to take this opportunity to congratulate those new and returning members of the Rochester City Council, as well as the new and returning members of the Rochester School Board and Police Commission who have, or will take office during the next few days. I know that we all share a love for the City of Rochester as well as the desire to see it improve and prosper in the years ahead. I look forward to working with each of you in a common effort to make Rochester a bet ter place in which to live, work and raise a family. The decade of the 19803 has been a busy and exciting time for the City of Rochester and its people. Much that needed to be done to move Rochester ahead has been accomplished. For the first time in the city's history, Rochester has modern and-working water and sewer treatment facilities that not only provide us with quality water and sewer services, but that have also put an end to the fouling of our environment. Our Downtown Revitalization project has transfigured the face which Rochester shows to the world. The Wyandotte Mill, once a vacant and decaying monu ment to the past, has been refurbished and is now providing much need ed quality low-cost housing for our senior citizens. A much needed addi tion to the Gonic Elementary School is rapidly nearing completion and will soon provide additional classrooms for our school population, as well as a community recreational facility. Seven bridges that were decaying and in disrepair have been replaced. Three other bridges have received major repairs, and four additional bridges are currently under study and design for future construction. This major effort will constitute a strong and safe foundation on which we will build a better and more efficient transporta tion network.
