"Another Excellent Excursion Into The Realm Of Miike"
4 stars"

Miike is without a doubt, one of, if not the most original directors around today. His volume of work is immense and some of his works are quite dense. Never one to shy away from taboo subjects and extreme violence, Miike has gathered a massive cult following and I believe this is fantastic.

This movie again showcases a bit more of his weird and artistic side with the multi layered language usage and camera angles and techniques. Chickens, Spiders, Ping Pong…Miike creates some more of his truly unique but creative ideas. For a completionist or those looking to just get into Miike…this is a perfect start.

Explosive and stylish, this turbo-charged thriller from Audition director Takashi Miike is an all-out assault on the senses. Set in Rio, Okinawa and Tokyo’s notorious Shinjuku district, City of Lost Souls takes a journey deep into the seedy underside of Japan’s gangland, exploring its eccentric characters and extreme violence. When a Brazilian-Japanese named Mario is released from jail, he sets out to rescue his beautiful Chinese girl-friend, Kei, from being deported to Japan. Back in Tokyo he tries to raise the cash to buy counterfeit passports for him and Kei to flee to Australia. Along the way the couple find themselves face-to-face with violent Yakuza and Triad gangs, and must fight for their freedom. Packed with incredible set-pieces, this full-throttle movie is one ride you won’t want to get off!
