This book is a pleasure to read, I read it as soon as it arrived & then shared with my 2 boys who are 8 & 12, who loved it, mr12 was captivated by it, as it is a book about a book about a book. Well worth having in your childs collection, IMO. Recommend for all ages :)

My kiddies, who are two, just love this new book. And it is quite an enjoyable book for Mum and Dad to read to them – which cannot be said for a lot of childrens books! Not too long either, which I appreciate when the books are lined up before bedtime.

Description

Charlie Cook is reading a book about a pirate captain, who is reading a book about Goldilocks, who is reading about a knight, who is reading about a frog…From kings and queens to aliens and ghosts, there's something for everyone in Charlie's amazing book! Entertaining and original - another winner from the best picture book team in the world.

Once upon a time there was a boy
called Charlie Cook
Who curled up in a cosy chair
and read his favourite book . . .

About a leaky pirate ship
which very nearly sank
And a pirate chief who got the blame
and had to walk the plank.
The chief swam to an island
and went digging with his hook.
At last he found a treasure chest,
and in it was a book . . .

Review

"The unusual endpapers for this appealing book show a shelf with 10 books: Shiver Me Timbers, Fairy Tales from a Forgotten Island, and so on. A boy named Charlie Cook reads those books, beginning with a tale about a pirate, who digs for treasure and finds . . . a book about Goldilocks, who creates havoc in the bears' house before retiring to Baby Bear's bed to read . . . a book about a knight, who defends himself from a dragon by reading aloud from a joke book, and so on. The pattern progresses through volume after volume, finally coming full circle in a clever conclusion. Children will enjoy wrapping their minds around both the art and the story as the tale sequences through book after book. Amusing pencil, ink, watercolor, colored pencil, and crayon illustrations make the most of each new setting and cast of characters, while varying page design and type make the volume-to-volume differences more apparent. Great fun." Carolyn Phelan, Booklist
