Excerpt from Catalogue of Sculpture by Prince Paul Troubetzkoy, Exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, February 1 to February 28, 1912 During these early years of work in Milan he was very productive and wide in range. For, although he continued to add to his success as a sculptor of animals, he also turned his attention to portraiture and be gan to execute what became a long series of diverse and spirited presentations. In 1897 he left Italy to settle in Moscow. His success in his father's country was im mediate. His reception soon led to his ap pointment as professor of sculpture in the Imperial Academy of the Fine Arts in Mos cow, a post which he filled for two years. He continued as productive as he had been in Milan, modeling many searching and vigor ous portraits of persons of distinction. During his first summer in Russia and at sub sequent times he visited Tolstoy, whose friend he quickly became, and modeled several powerful portraits of the count. At the Exposition Universelle at Paris in 1900 his triumph was conspicuous, his work exhibited bringing him highest honors in the Russian section. The following year he won the competition, open to the world, for the heroic equestrian statue of Alex ander III, which now occupies an imposing place in St. Petersburg, having been formal ly dedicated June 5, 1909. After several years' residence in Russia, Troubetzkoy went to Paris, where he has since resided, in the rue Weber, not far from the Bois de Boulogne. Here he still keeps his numerous pets - these have included from time to time, bears, wolves, sheep and dogs of many kinds - in the modeling of which he has had such marked success.
