Description

This is a comprehensive guide to the use of low-pressure pipelines instead of open canals for distribution of irrigation water. The book describes the advantages of buried pipe distribution systems over canals, especially lined canals. The features of buried pipelines are described, and their attractions for farmers described. The authors point out that pipes and distribution systems can be constructed and repaired locally, and small-scale local industry can consequently be stimulated and encouraged. Environmental benefits can result from improved use of land and water; and a reduction in the spread of diseases is possible. The text identifies the circumstances where buried pipe systems are likely to be the most appropriate and cost-effective distribution method. It provides details of the different types of system: open, closed and semi-closed systems; and branch and loop systems. The merits of various pipe materials are considered, especially concrete and uPVC. Detailed recommendations are made on the selection of suitable systems, and their design, construction, operation and maintenance. Tables and graphs are included to assist design engineers, and the procedures are explained with flow charts and worked examples. Line drawings are used throughout to illustrate typical structures.
