Our Opinion is that degenerative arterial changes are the cause of the whole condition. In the second case the lengthy period during which 'the drug, opium, had been taken - 32 years - and the immense doses indulged in, especially during the past three years - 68 grs. Of extract of opium daily - with no gastric, intestinal, or mental symptoms evidenced until five months previous to his admission to this Hospital. Also the rapid clearing up and entire absence of mental deterioration at the time of his discharge two months after admission.
