Educa tion at Rutgers College - begun and nourished by men of Dutch name and descent, who kept alive the memories of their ancestors was fol lowed by a Visit to Holland in 1869. Then came four years of life among the Japanese, whose only teachers of science and European civiliza tion for over two hundred years had been Dutcb' men. Nine years' service as pastor of the First Reformed Dutch Church in Schenectady, N. Y., enabled me to become acquainted with the con tents both of the deacon's chest at home and the rich collection of documents illustrating Dutch American history in the State Library and City Hall in Albany. During a residence of seven years in Boston, I made two literary journeys through Nederland and its libraries. I learned.
