Description

Excerpt from Book-Prices Current, Vol. 32: A Record of the Prices at Which Books Have Been Sold at Auction, From October, 1917, to August, 1918, Being the Season 1917-1918, Arranged in One Alphabet The most important sale recorded in this volume is that of the further instalment of the Huth Library (q-s), which, as a reference to the Table of Contents will show, realised thus making the total sum to date, Large as this amount is, there is now little doubt that when the entire library is dispersed it will fail to come up in point of sheer value to the record established by the great Hoe Sale, held in New York during April and May, 1911. The total amount realised for Robert Hoe's fine collection of books amounted to the colossal sum of or, roughly, of our money. It will not, of course, have been forgotten that in the Huth Library there were a number of costly Shakespearean folios and quartos which were sold privately, and, there fore, do not appear in Sotheby's catalogue; but, even if they had done so, the Hoe total could hardly have been reached. When compared with these figures, the amounts real ised by the sales of the other libraries reported in this volume seem small indeed, though some of them were of great importance, and in their way quite as interesting as the two larger collections of which I have spoken. The Table of Contents affords the necessary information in this respect, though attention must certainly be called to the libraries of Mr. C. Fairfax Murray, sold by Messrs. Christie, Manson and Woods on December 10-12, 1917. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
