Description

Bishop's Stortford was a small town in the Edwardian period. However, over 1,500 men and women from the town were on active service at some point during the First World War. Stortford had a munitions factory, many land girls, a VAD hospital, a POW camp and a very active Volunteer Corps. It also billeted over 20,000 troops, including at one point Albert Ball, flying ace. There are 208 names on the war memorial (but this is not the complete list of those who died). For every name on the memorial there are dozens who were affected by their lives and deaths. This book will bring the town of Bishop's Stortford and the experiences of its residents during the First World War to life. It shows people with real lives, people who might have shared the same interests, schools and churches, as well as walking the same streets, working in the same buildings and shopping in the same shops, as people in Bishop's Stortford today.

Author Biography:

Sarah Turner has been the Curator at Bishop's Stortford Museum since 2006. As curator she is responsible for the care of thousands of wonderful objects that relate to the history of Bishop's Stortford and surrounding areas. She began by specialising in Prehistory, but since curating the Bishop's Stortford Museum she has formed a keen interest in early twentieth-century history. She is currently researching the effects of the First World War in the local community. David Clare has been a volunteer at Bishop's Stortford Museum since 2007. He first produced material for the 2009 exhibition on the First World War. Since then David has been researching the First World War and its effect on Bishop's Stortford. Carolyn Downing has lived in Bishop's Stortford, with her husband, since 1983. She has an MA in Modern History from University College London. She has continued her interest in history as a volunteer at the Bishop's Stortford Museum.
