Description

This text examines men's relationships with one another in English literature and the ways those relationships affect women. Central to this study is Sedgwick's conception of "male homosocial desire": this continuum includes the elements of both homosexuality and homophobia in male-male relationships and extends desire far beyond the simply sexual. She argues that the increasing secular, psychological and descriptive power of male homophobia not only affected a male homosexual minority but also radically shaped the erotic, class and national ideologies of English men and women as a whole.
