Description

Excerpt from Australia, Vol. 1 of 2 Cook was happier, either in his point of approach or in the intelligence he brought to bear upon the discovery. The sea-shore, he said, was white and sandy; but the country within green and woody. It had a very pleasing appearance, was of moderate height, diversified by hills and valleys, ridges and plains. He shortened sail, and remained for the night. Pur suing his researches the next day, he called the highest point of the land Cape Howe; and from this very Cape Howe there now runs the line of division between the oldest and the richest of the Australian colonies - New South Wales and Victoria. Just one hundred years after Cook named the point, a party of Victorian surveyors commenced the work of defining and marking the exact bearing and position of this imaginary line. Having satisfied himself as to the richness and beauty of the land, Cook bore away north, went into Botany Bay, missing, as was not difficult, the entrance into the now famous and far more important Port Jackson, and, after pursuing his journey as far as Booby Island, sailed away from Australia.
