Army of Darkness Movie Reviews

“So, The Evil Dead was a straight-up microbudget horror flick, and Sam Raimi yanked the steering wheel over to splatter-comedy a few years later with the partial-remake/mostly-sequel Evil Dead II: Dead by Dawn. For the third time around…? They've left anything that even looks like horror back on the shelf, opting instead for more of a epic-lite, campy slapstick-adventure. Think the Monty Python brigade after getting a bite chomped out of them by the Zombie Three Stooges, then fork over a bunch of typewriters, eleven million bucks, a dog-eared copy of A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, and DVDs of Return of the King and the collected work of Ray Harryhausen, and you're somewhere in the neighborhood. There are oodles of blurb-friendly words in the Big DVD Reviewer Book of Clichés I could lob out to describe Army of Darkness: hysterical, frenetic, campy, cult classic…but yeah, I'll stick with "essential” or…I dunno, “life-affirming”…The quick recap? Incandescently, indescribably brilliant…" DVD Talk

“if you’ve been around the horror block, I doubt you’ll get a shiver from this movie. That doesn’t mean don’t see it. Any horror fan will still applaud this classic. Raimi shows creativeness and originality in the genre that doesn’t appear in anyone else’s work. The blend of comedy and horror make for a groovy film!” 4.5/5 Best Horror Movies.com

“Like other cult films, Army of Darkness is not for everyone's taste. Those who are not familiar with the Evil Dead universe may have a difficult time actually "getting it.” The movie is filled to the brim with tongue-in-cheek, bad-ass dialogue and many of the lines are quotable. To put it simply, the viewer will either laugh nonstop or come away thinking this is the one of the stupidest movies ever made. I'm definitely with the cult crowd on this one, yet I don't think the film is as strong as the first two installments. The first film was sinister and serious, while the second perfectly juggled terror and humor in a strikingly fresh way. By contrast, Army Of Darkness is just plain old goofy fun," DVD Verdict

“..hella enjoyable. Bruce Campbell is the main reason for this, his performance reaching iconic levels even when his character is being a jerk. The horror is now almost gone completely and the film is instead a fantasy adventure with violent, morbid slapstick spread throughout (the original shooting title for this film was MEDIEVAL DEAD). Here, Ash makes the transition from punching bag to willing hero, giving the film an epic feeling that would make Joseph Campbell applaud. I might not be as huge a fan of ARMY OF DARKNESS as most people are. It’s still more enjoyable than most of the flicks out there. It has a vibe all its own and it’s insanely addictive..” filmgeekcentral.com
