ArmA for those you aren't familiar is the spiritual successor of the Game of the Year Operation Flashpoint, one of the most realistic military sims ever. Once you start playing you'll immediately notice the similarities. It's basically a game, no sim, where you can play as infantry, or drive a humvee, or tank, or fly in a helo or harrier jet… what ever you fancy. It's incredibly detailed and challenging, but it only gives as much as you put into it. One of the things that may put people off is also it's selling point: realism. One or two shots is enough to drop you, and often you get dropped without even knowing what hit you. This is a far cry from classic FPS games where you have a set amount of HP and you often can take quite a beating before you “die”.

One of the things that increases the immersion factor with this game is trackIR, or a head mounted tracking system where if you move your head in real life, your character also moves his/her head. This can be magnified so if you move 10 degrees your in game character moves 50…etc. This is especially in flying helos where you can track targets by moving your head. Also, you should invest in a decent joystick, preferably with a throttle to get the best experience from flying helos.

Oh yeah, and there's a huge and active community making lots and lots of mods. I know ArmA II is out now, but it is still in it's infant stages. Some more bugs to iron out there, so why not start with ArmA?

Description

ArmA Gold Edition brings together the acclaimed original game ArmA: Armed Assault and ArmA: Queens Gambit Expansion Pack in one intense war strategy package.

You will need to rely on keen eyesight, gut instincts and a sharp strategic mind if you are to survive on the expansive battlefields of ArmA. Every decision you make could mean the difference between death and glory for you and your troops.

Queen’s Gambit is focused on a new story-based campaign which takes place 18 months after the ArmA: Armed Assault war conflict. A group of seasoned mercenaries arrive to help the government with a sensitive matter that the army, no longer supported by the Americans, can not handle by itself…

With all-new environments to stage conflict and strategic ops, and a whole new range of characters, weaponry and vehicles, ArmA: Queen’s Gambit offers a new and improved experience for intense and realistic battle action.

Features:
  • New environments to explore and stage intense battles.
  • Campaign consists of 7 missions, each with multiple endings.
  • Multiplayer modes allowing 6 players to compete on a team.
