Pumping Machinery Much information relating to the matters referred to in the following pages will be found in text books, treatises, and trade catalogues, but it is treated, for the most part, in a manner too technical to be of real service to many who - although buyers and users of machinery - may not possess intimate knowledge of details of construction, the cost of machines, their productive capacity, &c. Conscious, as the Writer is, that the efforts of no single individual will suffice to cover the ground thus left vacant, he has endeavoured to present information with regard to the construction, the approximate prices of the machines described, the probable output, and other data which will serve as a basis for estimating the cost of most types of the machinery in general use to which reference is made and, approximately, the cost of working it. The arrangement adopted in the first edition of appleby's handbook OF machinery, which was published in 1869, has been to a large extent adhered to in this edition, but since that time, the advances made in all branches of mechanical construction have been so incredibly great and varied, that nothing which appeared in the above-named edition, or the numerous reprints of it, has been found suitable for reproduction, so that the descriptive matter has been entirely re-written and - as far as practicable - corrected up to this date.
