The birth rate per for Maryland probably lies between the figures 24 and 27. It can be assumed, therefore, that returns from any of the counties of Maryland, which are below 20 per indicate defective re turns, and a birth rate of 15 or less means very defective returns. The death rate exceeds 15 per. In eleven counties. The lowest death_rate is in Garrett County, per This county has almost entirely a white population, and its returns to this office are good. The death rate here given we believe is correct.
