Description

Excerpt from An Enquiry Into the Policy of Making Conquests for the Mahometans in India, by the British Arms: In Answer to a Pamphlet Entitled Considerations on the Conquest of Tanjore From the year i769, if not from a more early period, the Nabob has engaged a number of perrons to aft for him in Europe, in a great variety of ways. Thefe gentlemen have endeavoured to recommend themfelves to their employer by their extraordinary zeal and aetivity in his fervice and their pretenfions to that kind of merit are not wholly without foun dation. They have been indefatigable in their intrigues and publications. They have filled the world with many new topics of argument, and new narratives of fact. They have even been at the pains of correeling and amending hiftory; in order to accommodate it to his views, and for the fake of fet ting us right, not only with regard to his charaeter and pre tenfions, but even to his pedigree. Nothing on their fide has been wanting to form a party in his favour. He had great objeets in view, which were not to be compaffed but by the arms of the Englilh. It was therefore natural, that nothing fhould be omitted which might tend to obtain the authority, or at leali the connivance, of Great Britain, m the ul'e, which he had already made, and which he was {till in hopes of making, of the power of this kingdom in India.
