"Fun strategy game for 2 or more players"
4 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

The game is turn based and involves you playing a farmer and his wife as they consider how to grow their family, develop their farm, and ensure they have a large enough harvest not to go begging. There are lots of different strategies that you can try to win the most points when it comes to scoring at the end.

Have played through several times with different groups and all have enjoyed it. It takes a game or two to get used to it an then you start thinking through different tactics to try.

"Being a peasant has never been so fun!"

On the description this game sounds incredibly boring. You're a 17th century farmer and you and your spouse are making a bigger farm. Hardly edge of your seat stuff. However this game is actually very, very fun. When you take it out of the box it looks hopelessly complicated. However, after about one play through you can start to see it’s really pretty easy to get to grips with. The occupation and minor improvement cards look like gobbledegook at first, but after the first game you’ll already be thinking about strategies to improve your score and get a better farm.

There’s also something strangely satisfying about harvesting crops and getting more animals as they breed with each other and carefully managing you resources while keeping an eye on the other players.

The version I got from MightyApe came with sheep pig and cow tokens carved like the animals – instead of the little coloured squares you might be able to see on the screenshots – which makes it a bit more immersive. I think the screenshots on Mightyape might be for an eariler retail version of the game.

It’s also I think pretty family friendly. There is no violence whatsoever and no real ways to stuff the other players up – it’s more about responding to what they’re doing and working hard to get as many points as you can. So it’s not like monopoly where you’ll end up starting a row and ruining Christmas.

If there was a downside to this game I would say it was the price – but it's great for bonding with friends and family.

"Awesome game, should have bought it earlier!"

Really fun and engaging game. Instructions are clear and even the non-boardgamers in the house were keen to play. We've now played it 7 times and only had it 2 weeks. It's a game which can be played in 1 hour 30 ish and has more than enough to keep you wanting to go back and try a different strategy. Would highly recommend.

In Agricola, you're a farmer in a wooden shack with your spouse and little else. On a turn, you get to take only two actions, one for you and one for the spouse, from all the possibilities you'll find on a farm: collecting clay, wood, or stone; building fences; and so on. You might think about having kids in order to get more work accomplished, but first you need to expand your house. And what are you going to feed all the little rugrats-

The rules include a beginner's version and an advanced version.

Agricola is a turn-based game. There are 14 game turns plus 6 harvest phases (after turn 4, 7, 9, 11, 13, and 14).

Each player starts with two playing tokens (farmer and wife) and thus can take two actions per turn. There are multiple options, and while the game progresses, you'll have more and more: first thing in a turn, a new action card is flipped over.

Problem: Each action can be taken just once per turn, so it's important to do some things with high preference.

Each player also starts with a hand of 7 job cards (of more than 160 total) and 7 item cards (of more than 140 total) that he/she may use during the game if they fit in his/her strategy. Speaking of which, there are countless strategies, some depending on your card hand. Sometimes it's a good choice to stay on course, and sometimes it is better to react to your opponents' actions.
