"I was with my troop officer and seven men on the foremost ridge," writes a private, "and in about half-an-hour they had advanced right round our left flank. Six of the eight on my ridge were shot down: four killed, including the officer, and two with bullets through their heads. They died soon after. When the officer was shot the enemy were only a few yards off. All at once five of them appeared on our right only about three yards off, with rifles pointed at us two survivors. They shouted 'Hands up!' So I reasoned to myself in about the millionth part of a second that if I did not put my hands up, but BLOCKHOUSE AND DUMMY SENTRY ON THE CAPE TO KIMBERLEY LINE. Then" they came Surrender of the survivors. LIEUTENANT SHERIDAN. shot one of them, it would be certain death. So I decided to throw them up quick and took our rifles, bandoliers, boots, and hats, and went on. When we looked round we found that all our men, excepting the dead and wounded, had retired sometime before and left us." With a small band of survivors Captain Sandeman attempted to fight his way to the cattle enclosure, and there make his final stand. But the men with him were for the most part shot down. Already all the officers were down, and most of the non-commissioned officers, but still the survivors of that ghastly scene of death and suffering fought on. "The noise of the firing," says the witness already quoted, "was one incessant roar, bullets whistling and shrieki ng all over us."
