Description

This second edition has been updated to take account of research on the nature of reaction and reform in 19th-century Russia. It highlights the underlying problems faced by those who sought to modernize and restructure the Russian state and examines why they frequently became characterized as repressors rather than reformers. The text re-examines the major interpretations of the period and explores the themes that emerge. The author concludes by discussing the wider, often turbulent, foreign policy, which helped to shape events within Russia at this time. The book also includes study guides which contain exercises and advice on tackling differentiated exam questions. Features also include points to consider, key issues and key dates.
