The work, now laid before the public, consists partly of original pieces written by Mr. Ballou for this volume, and partly of articles from his pen which have already appeared in different periodicals. One object with the original publisher was to call forth, from the venerable author, some new contributions to the great cause to which he had devoted his life; some additional counsels, which his brethren may receive as a legacy, and some fresh testimony which the world may regard as the maturest dictate of long experience and reflection. Due to the age and scarcity of the original we reproduced, some pages may be spotty, faded or difficult to read.
