"A thought-provoking drama"

Definitely not your average movie. An interesting perspective of every day folks in a land with possibly different values and ethics to ones in the audience.

There are no heroes in this movie, each character has a part to play and has to deal with his or her own fears as the plot unfolds.

The parents of a family that has issues hits a snag that temporarily puts their plans on hold as they deal with the crisis. But the development of this crisis is integrated so seamlessly with the movie that it excels in emphasizing the normality of life in this land. These are just everyday average citizens going about their lives – this movie could just have easily been about any family in any land in this world. Well done!

Convincing performances by the cast. If there is one gripe it is the crying of the children that defeated the suspension of disbelief. But that is a very minor quibble – the children performed admirably!

If you're in the mood for something different, without explosions, dramatic music (mind you – the theme music is great – lends itself to the material under consideration with its haunting melody), fast action and the like, here is something that may give you something to ponder long after the movie has finished.

Description

A Separation

Winner of the 2012 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, this utterly compelling Iranian drama depicts the lies and intrigue that come into play in the wake of a married couples separation. The film focuses on the Nader and Simin, who live with their eleven-year-old daughter Termeh in Tehran.

Not exactly out-of-love, Nader and Simin are attempting to divorce on the grounds of irreconcilable differences. With visas to emigrate from Iran, Simin is anxious to ensure a better future for Termeh, but Nader refuses to leave his elderly father. When the judge refuses to formalise their separation, Simin departs the family home, leaving Nader to hire a housekeeper. Razieh is a devout woman who tends to the apartment and Nader's father.

When Nader returns one day to find his father alone, it leads to an altercation that has unexpected consequences. Propelled by an acute attention to class, religious and gender differences, director Farhadi's meticulous script questions the very basis of truth and ethics.

At its heart A Separation is a gripping, humane drama that recalls classic Hitchcock in its twists and turns.

Critic Reviews:

  • " You cannot watch the film without feeling kinship with the characters and admitting their decency as well as their mistakes. " – David Thomson
  • " Dynamically shot and paced like a thriller, the film has the density and moral prickliness of a good novel. " – Jon Frosch
  • " These people seem so real they might live next door. And they probably do. " – Tom Long
