Description

Excerpt from A Catalogue of the Collection of Tracts for and Against Popery (Published in or About the Reign of James II.) In the Manchester Library Founded by Humphrey Chetham, Vol. 2: In Which Is Incorporated, With Large Additions and Bibliographical Notes, the Whole of Peck's List of the Tracts in That Controversy, With His References Dodd's Certamen Utriusque Ecclesice, first printed in 1724, 4to, is a brief but useful list, compiled by the Roman Catholic historian, whose real name was Hugh Tootle, Of the authors on both sides, with the principal work of. Each, from the period of the Reformation to the end Of the reign of James the Second. It is very scarce, and has sold, when it has occurred, at a high price, and has not been reprinted except in Sir Walter Scott's edition Of the Somers' Tracts (vol. Xiii). Through the kindness and liberality Of lewis loyd, Esq., to whom I made known my desire to add this Tract to my concluding volume, and who has favoured the chetham society with a donation Of ten pounds for that purpose, I am enabled to accomplish this Object. The re print will be found as nearly a facsimile as possible. The short historical sketch at the bottom of each page it was considered unadvisable to Omit, but I scarcely need say that it will hardly be accepted as a correct or impartial summary of the portion of English history to which it refers.
