"A must-own Fincher classic comes to Blu-Ray"
5 stars"

Zodiac represents one of the more unheralded of the modern classics of cinema. Overlooked during a busy 2007, if you haven't seen it, now is the perfect time, because this is one of the best 1080p releases available. Despite its lengthy runtime, drama- and dialogue-oriented script, and minimal action, the story is so engrossing and the performances so commanding that you'll be spellbound the entire time. Visually, the clarity, depth, and precision of the image is breathtaking, practically reference quality; this is one of my favourite films and seeing it in Hi-Def was a revelation. This is nothing short of brilliant cinema, and is a must-have for your Blu-Ray collection.

"A sophisticated study of obsession"
5 stars"

This is indeed Fincher at his best, in what amounts to a serious study not of the Zodiac killer, much less the killings, but of the obsession of those on the trail. But enough about the movie. A few points are particularly worth noting for this release.

First up, though a “director's cut”, don't expect a radical change from the theatrical release: you may have to study the notes to work out what's changed. (But then, since the first cut was so compelling, change was scarcely needed.)

Second, this really is a very strong HD treatment, so welcome after the disappointment of the SD release, which struggled with the film's dark palette and was very soft. (I hear the recent Paramount release is even sharper than the Warner, but there's nothing to complain about with this one, especially at this price.)

Finally, a big cheer for the extras – and this is one movie whose topic cries out for strong commentary and historical background, both of which you get in spades.

All round, a great release, and one to revisit at length. Highly recommended.

Description

During the 1960s and ‘70s, a serial killer, known only as “the Zodiac”, has the San Francisco bay area in a clutch of terror, killing innocent people uncontrollably and taunting police and journalists with letters, clues and cryptograms. Several jurisdictions become involved in the sensational mystery, but the culprit continues to evade the authorities.

Two journalists and two police officers become obsessively involved in the case. Highly intelligent editorial cartoonist, Robert Graysmith (Gyllenhaal), and self-destructive ace reporter, Paul Avery (Robert Downey Jr) are among the primary recipients of the killer’s many messages to their newspaper, the San Francisco Chronicle. The two begin to gather as much information about the case as possible.

Meanwhile, skilful homicide detective, David Toschi (Mark Ruffalo) and his partner, Bill Armstrong (Anthony Edwards), are equally consumed by the harrowing circumstances as they delve deeper into the investigation. The four men will become dangerously immersed in the puzzling case, which will either build or destroy their careers in the process.
