The first signing to Halfcut, Shock's recently announced imprint label While She Sleeps were recently named BEST BRITISH NEWCOMER 2012 at the recent Kerrang Awards in the UK.
Over the last year alone the Sheffield England based act have supported Bring Me The Horizon, Silverstein and Your Demise in high profile slots as well as doing the festival circuit at Hevy Fest, Slam Dunk, Grasspop Metal Meeting and Groezrock. They’ve played over 300 shows across the UK and mainland Europe with no signs of slowing down.
“’This Is The Six’ is an invitation for people to join us, to get involved,” frontman Loz says. “We look at ourselves as the ‘five’ and the fans as the ‘sixth,’ and the six of us are on the road, touring together. We've all known each other for so long, so we have this really close bond. We’re a unit.”
“It sounds heavier than previous songs but not just musically heavier,” Loz says. “There are a lot of messages in there that quite deep and meaningful – so the whole album in general is a really heavy listen. It takes you on a real emotional rollercoaster of a ride. One minute it’s heavy breakdowns and guitars screeching at you, and the next it’s us singing along and chilling. It’s brutally honest, whether we’re talking about England, religion, the people we've met on the road…”
WHILE SHE SLEEPS formed with the blue collar and hard-nosed work ethic that resonates so strongly with the Steel City locals. It is this ethic that has grabbed the attention of the press, radio and TV worldwide, with Kerrang, Metal Hammer, RockSound and Revolver already behind them, as well as highly sought after spins from the likes of BBC Radio One, XFM, Total Rock and Kerrang TV.
Upon hearing what they've got on offer our horns are wearing out – fast. WHILE SHE SLEEPS will be the name on everyone’s lips while they grab 2012 by the balls and make it their own.
Review
Named after the term they use to describe their close relationship with
their fans, Sheffield metalcore quintet While She Sleeps' full-length debut
album, This Is the Six, is steeped in a similar gang mentality. Attempting to
replicate frontman Lawrence “Loz” Taylor's larynx-shredding vocals isn't
particularly advisable, but the majority of the 12 tracks here are designed to
be shouted along with from the rooftops, hence the terrace chants on the
feedback-drenched “Love At War,” the Gallows-esque, groove-laden
“Satisfied In Suffering,” and the squalling post-hardcore of “False
Freedom.” Backed by Carl Bown's gutsy, dynamic production, the constant
stream of Guitar Hero solos, and propulsive rhythms on the likes of the aptly
titled, doom-laden “Until the Death,” the ferocious Scandinavian-tinged
“Be(lie)ve” (the only track to make the cut from 2010 mini-album The North
Stands for Nothing), and the breakneck-speed opener of “Dead Behind the
Eyes” (featuring Comeback Kid's Andrew Neufeld) will no doubt appeal to the
army of fans who helped them to scoop Best British Newcomer at the Kerrang!
Awards. But This Is the Six is arguably far more intriguing when it abandons its
default mode of anarchy and pursues a more harmonious approach, as on the
surprisingly delicate instrumental “The Chapel” and the elegant piano hooks
of the choral closer “Reunite.” While She Sleeps may still find themselves
overshadowed by their Steel City neighbors Bring Me the Horizon, but
there's enough potential here to suggest they might not be second-best for too
much longer. Jon O'Brien – Allmusic.com
