"A gentle story with a kernel of strength"
4 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

A beautifully gentle tale, but with a current of disciplined strength running through it in a very typically oriental idiom. Regretably, many westerners are likely to miss the real beauty of the story.

"Fantastic film, looks amazing on blu-ray"

Isao Takahata's final film, and it's absolutely amazing. Another ghibli release from Madman that looks and sounds gorgeous. Highly recommended!

"Another Ghibli Jewel!"

Studio Ghibli keeps showing its quality with another wonderful animated movie. The art used on this movie is quite interesting and unique!

Description

The Tale Of The Princess Kaguya

Found inside a shining stalk of bamboo, a tiny girl grows into an exquisite young lady, raised by an old bamboo cutter and his wife. From the countryside to the grand capital city, she enthralls all who encounter her.

Based on the classic Japanese folktale, “The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter”, “The Tale of The Princess Kayuga” is the culmination of decades of contemplation by director and Studio Ghibli co-founder Isao Takahata.

Critic Reviews:

  • " A poignant gem, very different in tone to the director's most celebrated works, Grave of the Fireflies and Only Yesterday, but no less worthy of praise and admiration. " – Mark Kermode
  • " The impression is of a continuous series of watercolours, similar to the narrative scroll revealed to Kaguya in a key scene. " – Tara Brady
  • " A hand-drawn masterwork. " – Nicholas Bell
