Description

The River Cottage Collection 1 DVD box set includes 3 popular TV Shows – Escape to River Cottage, Return to River Cottage and River Cottage Forever – over 8 hours of content.

Get back to basics as celebrated chef and self sufficiency guru Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall provides a unique and fascinating insight into country life.

We live in a busy world, overflowing with microwave ready meals, day to day challenges and pollution. But Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s dream of escaping the city sprawl with all its stresses and downshifting into rural Dorset is finally realised when he arrives at River Cottage in his 1960s Ford Corsair convertible.

His experiment to live off the fat of the land through the sweat of his brow, involves a steep learning curve…and a lot of fun! Hugh takes an entertaining yet educational approach to self-sufficiency involving livestock, vegetable growing and selling his produce, all while dealing with unforseen setbacks and heartache. But Hugh finds time to show how a sumptuous meal or two can be prepared, all from local ingredients.

This three disc set brings together Hugh’s first three series in one handy collection to help create your own River Cottage H.Q., try out his delicious recipes, or just simply entertain arm-chair self-sufficiency enthusiasts.

Escape To River Cottage (1999)
It is Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's dream to escape the urban sprawl and find a little place in the country where he can live off the fat of the land. When Hugh finds River Cottage nestling in the heart of the beautiful Dorset countryside he sets about turning his dream into a reality. The first casualty to self-sufficiency is the flower bed which makes way for terracing to grow edible crops. Once the vegetables have been taken care of Hugh sets off in his 1965 Ford Corsair in search of livestock. The first arrivals at the cottage are a pair of eight week old Gloucester Old Spot pigs but more animals soon follow. Hugh also finds time to show how sumptuous meals can be prepared from the local produce be it sea fish, pigeons or freshly caught pike.

Return To River Cottage (2000)
It is a year since Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall left the city behind and went to live off the fat of the land in the country at River Cottage. He has sampled the good life and found it to taste pretty sweet. But now he wants more…

River Cottage Forever (2002)
Hugh Fearnely-Whittingstall left the rat race behind to start a new self-sufficient life at River Cottage in Dorset. After two years he now has a smallholding with vegetables, chickens, sheeps, cows and pigs. Now at the beginning of his third year it is a time for Hugh to reflect over the last two years and decide if he should always stay at River Cottage.

User Reviews

“If you don't get on with the latest incarnation of H F-W, these earlier series may be the antidote. Over the course of three years you watch him grow his own vegetables, raise livestock and integrate himself into the local community. Of course some of this is probably set up to make good TV but it's still appealing. He shows his skill at the traditional pastimes of huntin', shootin' and fishin', but leavens that with a willingness to learn and take part. As he gets involved with things from farmers markets, to cider circles to mouse whisperers, he relates his tale with wit and charm. For me, the extras, other than the Christmas special, were a little dull but they aren't the reason to buy this box set. This boxed set is about watching one man live the dream of giving up the city, moving to the country and trying to become self sufficient. And, as such, it's inspiring for those who daydream about doing the same.” Urban Roy, UK

“This box set covers the first three years of Hughs life at river cottage. Since watching them, over and over, I have got my self an allotment and intend on getting livestock as soon as possible. The reason that I fell in love with these series is the fact that he doesn't get everything right all of the time. He has bad days and even some rather large disasters. But he keeps on smiling and always seems to find a solution that has him coming out laughing. Even if you do not intend to have your own small holding you will become instantly drawn into the lifestyle he has chosen and find yourself laughing along with him and the extremely friendly people he meets along the way. Also I purchased the cook book which accompanies the series, "The River Cottage Cook Book”, and have found it invaluable." Jamie W, UK
