Brannigan Kaa's debut album celebrates te reo Màori and the Màori standard surround sound made popular during the 1960s.
“Songs like Ten Guitars were adopted by Màori musicians during the sixties,” Brannigan explains. “They suit the Màori way because they celebrate the guitar, the use of harmony, and community living.”
The eleven original tracks that feature on Taputapu may be waiata Màori – but they’ve got a millennium feel about them. “I’ve tried to capture a ‘live-in-concert’ sound with heaps of ‘feel’ on Taputapu,” Brannigan says. “They’re Màori songs in Màori, but there’s a heap of retro and contemporary influences in there – rock, pop, funk and blues.”
