The Tornado is one of the most important NATO combat aircraft and with its modern electronics and outstanding flying characteristics it forms the backbone of the European air defences. The sphere of application of this fighter-bomber includes offensive air support for land forces, containment of the battlefield and attack against enemy air forces on the ground and in the air. On 22.7.1958 the first Federal German flying unit, 31 Fighter Bomber Squadron went into service. For the 50th anniversary in 2008 a Tornado was given a spectacular special livery and the nickname “Pride of Boelcke”. In addition to the Boelcke image the name and a Fokker D.VIII were depicted on the Tornado.
