The Reale, built by the royal shipyards of Barcelona, was the flag ship of Don Juan of Austria in the 1571 sea battle of Lepanto, the greatest battle between galleases in world history, in which the fleet of the united Christian Mediterranean powers, the so-called Holy Alliance, destroyed an Ottoman fleet. The Reale seized the great flag of the Caliph and became the symbol of the Battle of Lepanto.
