Description

La Grande Illusion (also known as Grand Illusion) is a 1937 French war film directed by Jean Renoir, who co-wrote the screenplay with Charles Spaak.

Considered a triumph of French cinema, Jean Renoirs anti-war classic La Grande Illusion was the first foreign film ever to receive a Best Picture Oscar nomination. Set during the First World War, it tells the dramatic tale of two French soldiers, captured and imprisoned in a German POW camp. Involved in an unsuccessful escape attempt, the soldiers are summarily sent to an impenetrable fortress known as Winterborn. Challenged to the core and subject to all manner of class struggles, the soldiers set in motion a bold new plan for escape. Starring Erich von Stroheim (Sunset Boulevard), Jean Gabin (Daybreak) and Pierre Fresnay (The Man Who Knew Too Much), La Grande Illusion is a masterful and thought-provoking journey into wartime experience.
