"Powerful depiction of struggles of early Chinese Miners in NZ"
5 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

Excellent movie which ticks many of the boxes with regards the experiences of the Chinese miners who came to New Zealand during the gold rush. The movie powerfully captures the xenophobia of the European miners and the constant threat they pose to the welfare of the Chinese. A great story built around a small cast of characters, which provides a good insight into the lifestyle and challenges these miners faced.

"The Chinese goldminers at Cromwell before the town was flooded."

An extraordinarily beautiful drama.

I'm having a run on watching NZ movies and this was just plain brilliant. From the opening scenes, to the music, to the scenery, to the beautiful and, I assume, realistic period clothing and settings. An awesome snippet of early Kiwi and Chinese/Kiwi life. I felt like I had gone back in a time warp and was actually there. The story was sensitive and engaging, and from what I know of this time period very real to actual experiences of the Chinese during the Gold Rush era. No wonder it won 8 NZ Film and Televsion awards. Well deserved. If you love a great drama, a historical story, or a great Kiwi movie, then this is the movie for you.

Description

Two poor Chinese gold miners in Otago in 1895 dream of returning home after 12 years. Chan has a wife in China, as well as a child that he has not seen. One day they find enough gold to pay their debts and return home. Chan goes to town to buy supplies and pay the debts. He encounters prejudice, religion, opium, hookers, the circus, and love (among other things). Despite a tempting offer to stay with the circus and the beautiful Li, he opts to return to his old friend so that they can fulfil their dream of returning home – things don't go as planned, however.
